I made the mistake of buying fake - so you wouldn't have to!

I'm not new to eBay, I'm not new to Christian Louboutin, but I still managed to get fooled into buying a fake pair of boots. I decided to create this post, so you could see what it is that you might be sent (factory direct from China!) when you buy fake designer footwear.

I paid $600 for the lot. Those boots perhaps cost $0.60 to make. I will do my best to get that back; not because I need it, but so as not support organised crime.

Authentic Louboutins are made of leather - uppers, inside, soles. They are hand made in Italy and at least 10 people touch every single shoe in the manufacturing process. They are exclusive and exquisite. What you are about to see is the exact opposite. There are unknown materials used and the people who made them in China were probably children.

However, enough of the grim stuff, let's get on to the fun stuff: pictures! You can click on all of them to see them bigger.

The shoes were sent by EMS, with a tracking number (that wasn't sent to me though), and it was delivered yesterday. I thought it would come from the US, but the sender appeared to be situated in China; that was red light no. 1. I carefully cut the tape, and this is what welcomed me:

Exhibit A

Uh oh! Now, I own a few pairs of Louboutins and I know what their boxes look like. The inside shoebox here doesn't look anything like the real thing. It's brittle cardboard and the parallel lines running across it are very faint and close together. At this stage I was pretty certain the contents would be fake, so I took out the shoebox:

Exhibit B

On the side of the box was this:

Exhibit C

That amused me. Who would ever fall for that? Seriously, if you were to see this box on offer at the market on town square, would you really believe that designer boots have a hand-cut label and Chinese hieroglyphs on them? If anyone can tell me what that means, please let me know. Perhaps it's a big "HA HA", as per Nelson from The Simpsons.

Boldly, I opened the box to bring its guts to light. First of all, a shocking chemical smell hit me. I don't really mind the smell of paint and its other pungent petrochemical relatives, but this was very strong. Let's lift the lid:

Exhibit D

Look, they even gave me a free pair of extra heel tips (taped to the box top)! Isn't that nice? And, oh, a free paper bag as well!

And those lovely red dusbags:
Exhibit E

Let's have a closer look at the bags, eh? With flash!

Exhibit F

I believe it is evident from the picture above that the dustbags are made of velvet, and the paint is chipping. Louboutin's original bags are not made of velvet, it's more of a soft cottony material. Moving on; here is one more picture of the inside of the box, and one showing the shape of the boots:

Exhibit G

Exhibit H

Louboutin doesn't make anything that looks like Exhibit H above. The boots are bastards of several styles. How can you counterfeit something that you haven't even seen before? Well, apparently you can.

Okay, now to the best part: the red soles!

Exhibit I

They actually managed to get the colour almost right. I'd give them kudos, but they're evil so, nah. The shape of the last and the embedded logo and its friends on the bottom of each shoe were obviously wrong and fake:

Exhibit J

The embedding on real Louboutins is deeper and sharper. And in leather, not plastic!

There was very shoddy craftmanship inside. The outside was like a $10 pair of boots from a budget supermarket but the inside was nothing like I've ever seen before:

Exhibit K

Exhibit L

I think the pictures above explain themselves.

That completed my journey to the horrible unknown!

Disgusted and amused at the same time, I packed everything up again. Here is the box, all ready to go:

I hope you will never have to experience close encounters of the fake shoe kind, and in order to make sure it doesn't happen, make doubly sure that you know what you are dealing with.

First of all, never buy your shoes from iOffer. They're all fake.

When dealing with eBay, familiarise yourself with the style you're looking for, read the seller's feedback, examine the pictures and if needed, ask for more. Stock photographs are always suspicious, and so are blurry ones. Peruse the description looking for anything odd, read return and refund policies and if you have any questions, ask. Only pay by PayPal and nothing else, ever. Not for designer shoes. Some other methods are okay but only if you completely trust the seller or it's something that isn't really faked. Like a coffe mug, for instance. Not designer shoes.

If there are 2 hours to go on a 7-day auction and there are no/very few bids even though the starting/current price is low, then that is a red light.

These are the basics. There are many other tips on how to avoid getting scammed, I don't want to be repeating everything here. Go on eBay and read the guides.

In case you're looking for Christian Louboutin's shoes on eBay, the ladies and gentlemen of the Purse Forum will gladly help you authenticate, and point out anything suspicious. You can find the forum here: http://forum.purseblog.com/christian-louboutin-shoes/

If any of the members are reading this, then thank you very much, guys, for reporting the auction and helping it to be taken down by eBay; your support and information regarding Google Checkout (do not use it for eBay!).

I hope you enjoyed this blog and the gruesome photographs. I also hope that you will never see a counterfeit shoe specimen in real life.

  3. Great post, it worries me how many people post discount Louboutin websites and ask if they're genuine.

I'll only ever buy from a Louboutin boutique, Net-a-Porter, Matches or Browns.

Just one question though, as you say the boots are a mix of Louboutin styles - how did you not know they were fake before you bought them beforehand? Sorry if you explained this and I missed it, it's a genuine question.

    Thanks for this great post.

  4. Thank you SO MUCH for posting this. I wish there were some kind of index online with links to pages like this, so that we, seekers of authentic fashion, could educate ourselves without having to spend hours sifting through google.

I've written a few on Chloe apparel which is, sadly, everywhere. Most people are more concerned with the handbags so they aren't aware of the counterfeit clothing polluting the web.

  5. Hello Maria,

My name is Kristin Pisarcik, and I work for ABC News 20/20 in NYC. I am working on an investigation on the fake designer shoe websites-there are tons of them, that sell fake Louboutin's and other shoes. I am looking for scam victims who paid a lot for fake shoes that were advertized as real. You seem perfect for our story. Please email me, kristin.s.pisarcik@abc.com when you can. Thanks, Kristin Pisarcik

  7. I haven't checked this blog in over a year. Thank you kindly for all the comments. Greetings to all fellow Louboutin lovers!

An update: I got my credit card charge reversed with no problems along the way. I had to submit all evidence of the transaction to my credit card provider, and I also contacted Google Checkout to have them run their own investigation. It took a couple of months and I suspect that the seller did not cooperate or even communicate with either my card provider or Google Checkout. The details they had provided to Google were fake, I tried calling the number she had provided on her account. No one there by that name. It was a company number.

I am at this stage very good at authenticating Louboutins. I still love buying and wearing them and do so frequently.

  10. ...everything you've said was right on...the cardboard box, the paint fumes, the chipped paint, EMS, delivered by CHINA, cheat material, etc. As you can see, I too am a victim. I thought I was doing something special for my fiance and it took forever to ship...and when they arrived (today) i am far to embarrassed to give them to her. $500 down the drain, and I used paypal! http://louboutinhome.com and http://shopyop.com...horrible people!

  11. Don't order Louboutins online, period. If you have never seen a real Louboutin, you won't be able to spot a fake one. People will easily cheat you online when it comes to luxury brands. The websites that sell fake Louboutins will usually have some red flags in the fine print, like, "shipping from our warehouse in China" (Louboutin does not make shoes in China or have a warehouse there), or "Louboutin Style." Some websites will outright say that they are "high-quality replicas," if you look carefully. Another method is to do a whois lookup- if it shows registration in China, that's another red flag. If it's too good to be true, then it probably is. I have never heard of brand-new real Louboutins being sold for $200. Buy it from a reputable dealer. Of course, you will be paying more, but you can be sure that it is the real thing (hopefully, I've heard of people refunding fake Louboutins to stores when they've bought a real one). Be a cautious consumer!

  12. Thanks for posting this! I'm on the hunt for a pair of Louboutins for my wedding day and i googled how to tell if they are fake and found your blog post :) I have found so many "too good to be true" priced Louboutins so i guess if they're too good to be true, they're probably not worth buying!

  13. I feel so dumb right now! I just ordered a pair online last week of Roller Boys and everything you said exactly happened to me... with it being shipped from EMS and them not sending a tracking #. They eventually sent me a tracking # after me bothering and making a big deal about it. I still haven't gotten them yet, but according to EMS it's almost here. That's if it's true or not. After looking at all your pics.... I'm scared of getting them now. I already know it's gonna be a fake and I paid $129.00 USD for them. I knew it was too good to be true. UGHZ!!

  15. So embarrassed to admit I also accidentally bought a pair of fake Louboutins. The pair I wanted were from a few seasons ago so I thought maybe these were overstock and at a great discount. I knew they were fakes because of everything you said about the Chinese package, etc. But the minute I opened the box the smell of plastic just filled the room! They were supposed to be snakeskin but it was like snakeskin photo printed on paper! I am trying now to get my $200 back as even though the website said they would refund my money if not happy, there's no address anywhere in which to send them back! Sneaky! Thankfully I paid via Paypal and am hoping to get the money back.

  16. I purchased these Christian Louboutin boots for my christmas trip to North Dakota. I knew i needed warm boots for the 20 degree weather. But i also wanted fashion with function. I was a little worried when they showed up at my door less then 24 hours before my plane departed. I noticed that the fur in side by my toes bunched up and felt funny. But i didnt have much time and decided to wear them to the airport. By day two the fur had molded around my foot and felt fine. Also i ordered a size 8 which fit my normal sneaker size 8.5 foot just fine. I really like the shaft height and i can unbotton the top and fold my flare jeans in. I would totally recommend these boots. I got lots of eyes checking them out in the airport.

I am pissed at myself. So here I am excited about ordering this shoes for 86% off in the clearance section and as soon as I received the shoe( I dont own a real pair yet)I looked it over and BAMM multiple NO NO's. There is black polish/pain ton the bottom of the sole.they didnt try to clean it up. There are also dull spots on the shoe, where it was handled. There is a small silver dot ( yes I looked the shoe over). There is a rough cut on the lining of the shoe and just by looking a the shoe one is bigger than the other(wider. What the sam hell? I have emailed the company and am waiting for a response. I am certain I am not going to get one. I then jumped on line and did research ( a little too late) and Ive found all types of information. So here is money lost but never again. I was a fool once wont happen anymore!

THATS THE WEBSITE THAT EVEN OPERATES UNDER CHRISTIAN LOUBOUTIN'S name. How the hell it's even possible?

  23. Why were you surprised that the shoes were fake when you clearly bought them far too cheap?

The whole point of wearing Louboutin is its exclusivity - which is tied into its price. Even if you managed to buy a cheap real Louboutin, you are still just pretending to be someone who can regularly afford Louboutins, so why bother? Pretending to be able to afford luxury goods while bargain hunting online is far more "fake" than these Chinese mass produced "Louboutins". Hey at least they are making a buck of you and you are just failing to fit into the rich crowd.

Instead of trying to act rich, how about work hard and BE rich; or be pretty enough to marry rich... Either one > being fake.

    1. That's absurd, although exclusivity is part of having them, there is nothing wrong with getting something exclusive for less, paying more is not a privilege, it's a luxury, not a liberty you can hold onto pretentiously. The joy of fashion is not in knowling you paid more than some poor sap, it's in knowing that you have something beautiful, and rare, what you're saying is that having a pet elephant is great but the enjoyment is the price and that if you didn't pay you are not a real elephant owner, you are ridiculous and petty. Real beauty is not that of a hoarder who can not bear for someone else to share in their wealth, in fact in doing so you are behaving poorly, and impoverished, jealous, and jaded. Grow up!

  26. Hi I also was a victim from this, I purchase a pair of shoe at http://www.christianlouboutinreplicas.com/
They sent me a pair of shoes that it didn't look like the picture at all, and in a color which I know the original CL doesn't even make. When I contact them They refuse for an exchange, even tho that was they mistake they told me to keep the shoes or give them away after paying around $150
They told me that is gonna be more expensive to send the shoes back to China, but I sent them back the shoes anyways and ended up spending more money from my pocket for the shipping. After few months later that they receive the pair of shoes that I sent them to them to China and they finally received them shoes back, they decided to sent me back the same stupid and wrong shoes that they previously sent me! I tried to reach them and they just don't answer me back:( They stole my money! I believe that they just want me to wait long time after they received and held the shoes, they were giving me hopes that this matter will be solve, they were like buying time and in the mean time giving me several excuses, so I couldn't file a disputed cause banks has a time frame or limit for that. Now they just not reply or communicate to me all sudden, around the last two months :(

  35. I saw ChristianLouboutinReplicas.com mentioned a few times in the comments. Replica means FAKE! Anything from that website is going to be fake. It literally says it in the website name. Please do your homework and read everything before buying any item that isn’t directly from the company. It breaks my heart how many people save up and spend their hard earned money on a scam. One thing that is always true when it comes to CLs. If the price is too good to be true, it is. You will never get a new pair for less than $600 in any sale.
